SCENT as a Shield - Saturday January 23, 2027 @ 8am PST/11am EST/4pm CET
Sniffing is a magically decompressing activity for dogs. It can help lower cortisol, decrease heart rate, increase optimism, and boost confidence. But what if we told you scenting is a powerful tool that can go beyond simple enrichment and enter the realm of changing emotions, building a sense of safety, and creating curiosity where there was once fear and concern.
Join Adam as they delve into how they build structure into scenting through their experience as a scent work judge and instructor, creating therapeutic set-ups that help dogs reap the benefits of sniffing, including settling into new environments.
We will follow along as Adam tells the tales of two "Wibbys" (a reference to their own dog), comparing and contrasting the two cases and highlighting how they used scent work as a framework for safety from which to explore their worlds.
Adam’s goal is to offer new perspectives on working with sensitive dogs, including those living in shelters, and to add to your toolbox of positive reinforcement training methods.
Come along and learn how the game of scent work can help environmentally sensitive dogs gain the confidence they need to thrive in any environment.
Sniff Sniff, Hooray! - Saturday January 23, 2027 @ 10am PST/1pm EST/6pm CET
It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a dog experiences the world best through their nose. With well over 10 million scent receptors, their powerful olfactory systems allow them to explore and understand their worlds to a degree we humans can only imagine.
Following their noses, though, can often lead to butting heads with their guardians, who might only have time for a brief walk, not an entire sniffari. Or maybe their noses lead them to explore the trash or laundry bins, which is definitely not our idea of fun.
But what if there was a way for us to see the world through their noses, to harness their sniffy superpower and use it to enrich and improve both their lives and those of their guardians?
Join Adam in their Learning Lab, where they will introduce you and your dog to a number of games with just that goal in mind. These games are simple for the guardian and fun for the dog, and require very little extra equipment - just a handful of old delivery boxes and some good-smelling treats.
Adam will also discuss what makes a dog's nose so powerful, why they just can’t help but follow them, and why that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This is an excellent choice for a Learning Lab for anyone interested in scent work, or for trainers interested in using it in management and enrichment programs for their clients. Whether you’re looking for a new sport to compete in or just new ways to enrich your dogs’ lives, come along and start exploring your world through your dog's nose.
